Bethnal Green Ventures community news – summer 2015

The Bethnal Green Ventures startup community has been super busy this summer. We have a massive roundup of alumni news to share with you, so we’ll get straight to it…

FAIRPHONE have now pre-sold over half of their 15,000 target needed to kick start production of Fairphone 2. We had a sneaky look at the new model earlier this summer and we LOVE it. Find out more about pre-orders here, or check it out for yourself at the Fairphone pop up space at London Design Festival 25-27 September.

OPEN UTILITY is launching Piclo this October, an exciting new energy marketplace that will allow businesses to buy their energy direct from renewable energy generators. Businesses can use Piclo to give them choice and control of their energy, to buy power in line with their values, support renewable energy projects they know and manage it all in an easy online account.

PLAYLAB LONDON have some groundbreaking research to share. They’ve proven that their mobile game Flowy has a clinically significant positive impact on people’s anxiety symptoms. Not only are these great results, but the speed with which this evaluation was carried out was an innovation in itself.

OVERLEAF users have now created a whopping 3 million projects on its platform for writing and publishing research. Apparently if you printed out all those pages you’d have a stack of paper the same height as Pluto! They’ve also had this nice blog published as part of the ALPSP Awards for Innovation in Publishing. 

WEVOLVER have used Reddit to attract over 40 engineers and designers to work together on a project to help develop an affordable 3D printed weightlifting prosthesis for an amputee who lost both hands in an oil rig accident. You can read more about the project here. They’re also working with an organisation in India to launch a campaign to provide free prosthetics to 5000 people over the next 3 years. 

CLUB SODA have launched the MOB – a 40 day programme to get you through a month off booze. The October MOB starts on September 24th and makes use of Club Soda’s online behaviour change tools and community events – book now for the early bird price. 


CHANGEALERT have been awarded funding by European Pioneers, an EU-backed funding programme for digital businesses in Europe. They’ll get access to €175,000 funding and mentoring over the course of the programme, which is based in Berlin.  

SEE WHAT I MEAN has been recognised by the Core77 Design Awards, coming runner up for the professional social impact award (BGV mentors over at Snook nabbed the winning prize for their CycleHack). 

SUPA ACADEMY have spent the last 9 months gearing up to the UK’s first youth run pop up ‘supa market’ – a three day event for 18-24 year olds to learn about retail enterprise. Check out MTV’s highlights of the event here.

OURPATH and ANDIAMO were chosen as part of the final 20 startups to enter the third and final phase of the EU-wide FICHe eHealth accelerator programme. The final phase provides €152,000 in capital and mentoring concluding in a demo day in 2016. 

RUN AN EMPIRE have added to their team with Jonny Albert joining as iOS developer. They have players around the world using their beta game and will announce the full launch date in coming weeks. They’ve been attracting some great press coverage in the meantime.
