Introducing: My Community Capital

By Will Spurr

Connect With Others. Pool Resources. Create New Social Activities.

Loneliness isn’t just unpleasant, it’s a public health crisis. From their time as social workers, Laurie, Elly and Jan realised that it was not enough simply to put people in the same room to solve loneliness. They need to create meaningful connections through shared interests. Unfortunately, many people lack the time, resources, connections and know-how to convene a group of people around a new activity. Additionally, existing interest-based platforms were either too narrow in scope or lacked the functionality for people to create their own prospective groups. Hence they developed My Community Capital, to give people the power to create, organise and enjoy new social activities.

How does the platform work? The first step for users is to join an activity that interests them. If nothing appropriate is going on in their area, they design their own activity and reach out to others to join the activity. Through the platform, they can connect with a vetted specialist to take the session, and find an accessible venue. If any costs arise, these are split between participants. Once the group is set up and paid for – the activity is ready to go. Loneliness affects people of all ages and backgrounds and the platform welcomes all different types of users; whether that’s people on social prescriptions, pensioners, or students.

My Community Capital are currently focused on user research and product development. If you want to get involved, you can check out their website, follow them on twitter via @MyCommunityCap, or get in touch with Laurie, Elly or Jan directly.
