Meet our Spring 2020 Teams: Route Aware

By Will Spurr

Meet the team helping people get from A to B as safely as possible.

The Founders

Allamdeep Bhangoo and Jean-Pascal Barbe are both serving detectives in the London Metropolitan Police. They’re joined by Stellar Chauhan, who also used to work for the Metropolitan Police, and acts as their Chief Marketing Officer.

What’s the problem being solved?

Cities can be dangerous places. When travelling on foot, we’ll often stick to well-lit, busier routes that we’re familiar with. This can require a great deal of local knowledge, and therefore can be complicated when travelling to new places at different times. Route Aware helps people risk-assess their journeys and plan accordingly. It also helps inform authorities about how they can best deploy their resources to prevent crime.

How does it work?

Route Aware taps into crime data to assess the risk of taking a certain route at a certain time. The data is community-driven, and helps people understand how they can get from A to B as safely as possible. They also provide tips and information for making safer journeys and be more aware of their surroundings. Additionally, their data is fed into MELINDA (Machine Enhanced Learning In Nuanced Data Analysis), which is a machine learning tool that helps to predict – and therefore prevent – crimes. They’re also working very hard to ensure that their crime data tools are not embedded with racial biases. Read more about that here

How are they getting on?

They’re currently building partnerships with Insurers and Law Enforcement agencies to understand how they can drive user engagement and better deploy their resources respectively. They’re also busy building their consumer-facing product.

How can you get involved?

There are several ways you can help Route Aware with their journey. Firstly, you can download the app and give them your feedback, especially regarding their beta testing. You can get in touch with the founders to share your thoughts, connections and suggestions with, including putting them in touch with relevant investors. Finally, you can keep an eye on their socials for upcoming webinars, blogs and awareness spreading.
