Meet our Spring 2020 teams: Spokesafe

By Will Spurr

Two wheels are better than none. That’s why Spokesafe is providing secure bicycle lockers throughout London.

The Founder

Max Wilson took the leap from Retail Investment to creating Spokesafe in February 2019.

What’s the problem being solved?

Cycling is good for both our health and the health of our cities. Consequently, City Governments are stepping up measures to make urban roads more accessible to cyclists but this investment usually focuses on building cycle lanes and promoting the health benefits of cycling. Secure cycle parking is often overlooked which makes finding a reliable, safe and convenient place to store your bike difficult. This creates a large barrier to mass adoption of cycling, with almost 300,000 victims of bike theft in the UK in 2016 – of which 25% gave up cycling as a result.

How does it work?

Spokesafe provides secure bicycle parking hubs in Central London. They find under-used or redundant spaces around the city and fill them with bicycle lockers. These lockers are covered, locked, accessible 24/7 and even provide charging points for e-bikes. Access to these lockers can be booked through Spokesafe’s website

How do they make money?

Cyclists can hire out spaces on a daily, monthly or annual basis.

How are they getting on?

Their first hubs are up and running in Soho and Oxford Circus, with several more in the pipeline over the next couple of months. They are also prototyping and piloting an outdoor modular locker system which can be installed at street level across the city.

As well as growing the number of available sites, Max is also busy automating and upgrading Spokesafe’s booking system which will give cyclists instant access to secure parking spaces wherever and whenever they need them.

How can you get involved?

Cyclists (or wannabe cyclists) can keep an eye out for new Spokesafe locations as they continue their rollout.
