Thinking about our community

By Anna Hyde

We recently welcomed two of BGV’s alumni teams, Talklife and Club Soda, into the office to talk to our current accelerator cohort about successfully building a community.  It got me thinking about how community is key to everything we do at BGV.

When we invest in teams, whether at the accelerator or post-accelerator level, we want those teams to feel part of our community and take advantage of the network, support and proximity to like-minded people.  Something I learnt from from Jamie, Jussi and Laura’s workshop, is that a community has to be nurtured and kept active. For the BGV community, that means the BGV team being proactive and reminding our startups that we’re here to help, whatever stage they’re at.

We want to remain actively engaged in the community, and continually participate in member discussions.  We host Founders’ Days as our way of supporting our community – these are bi-annual events that we hope provide a supportive and trusting environment to talk about issues with other empathetic startups.

We also recently launched the BGV YouTube channel to share videos which were filmed at our Founders’ Days – featuring insights from guest speakers and commentary from teams, reflecting on the topics discussed.  We see these as the tools that keep our community connected.  Our alumni also has an email group, with a healthy tribe of 120 people discussing a variety of topics on at least a weekly basis.

However, we feel we can always do more.  We want to act as a conduit for our community. We realise there are times that reaching out to the whole BGV alumni community doesn’t feel quite right, or it’s not clear exactly what advice it is you’re looking for.

We’re here to help bridge that gap – being able to connect teams with other teams that have had a similar experience, or introducing the perfectly placed mentor, who’s an industry expert or might be connected to your perfect customer.

The BGV door is always open, and we love to hear from our alumni – so don’t hesitate to get in touch, email any of our team, or give us a call, we always love to chat.
